Pressure Sensors for Hydraulic Cylinders in Form Presses
February 17, 2021
A form press is a large industrial machine used in a production facility to form sheet metal parts. They could be sheet metal body parts for an automobile, a steel bracket for a dishwasher or even a housing for an electrical panel. These machines incorporate hydraulic cylinders, which are utilized to control the amount of pressure applied to form the parts.
To help increase cylinder position control accuracy, typically two pressure sensors are utilized to measure the differential pressures across the hydraulic cylinder when making high-tolerance parts. The pressure sensor performance matching, stability, and ability to withstand high over-pressure situations are critical to ensuring parts are stamped to the correct tolerance. The extreme pressure and force applied on these large form presses can range from 3,000 PSI up to 15,000 PSI with large pressure spikes that could exceed these operating pressures by 2 to 4 times.
Challenge
Sensor stability, 1:1 interchangeability and ability to withstand high overpressure
Accurately measuring the applied pressure force helps to ensure the production parts are formed correctly. Too much pressure can distort the part, while too little pressure prevents it from being shaped correctly and to specification. Pressure sensors must be able to deliver accuracy while withstanding large pressure spikes without degradation of sensor performance in harsh operating conditions.
Solution
3200 Series Heavy Duty Pressure Sensor
Our 3200 Series Pressure Sensors provide both the accuracy and high overpressure protection required. In addition, 3200 Series Pressure Sensors offer high 1:1 interchangeability from sensor to sensor, which enables manufacturers to easily select matched pairs without having to sort through to find the right one. The high accuracy, 1:1 interchangeability, and over-pressure ratings of our 3200 Series pressure transducers ensure high part quality while also withstanding harsh operating conditions.
