PS61 Series Pressure Switches are designed for OEM applications and are available with enhanced ingress protection (IP) to IPX7, IPX9K, and IP6KX and integral electrical connections. PS61 Pressure Switches can withstand temperatures up to 250°F (121°C).These subminiature pressure switches are suitable for a wide range of hydraulic and pneumatic applications including medical and general industry.

What is the difference between the Diaphragm style and the Piston style?

The major differences between the two are the methods that Gems uses to seal off the fluids or gases on the customer’s side of the pressure switch. 

  • The Diaphragm style is much like a flat disk and is perfect for general use as well as heavy-duty applications.  It is designed to hold both oils as well as gases.   The repeatability and the average deadband for the diaphragm style is tighter than the Piston style. 
  • The Piston style is more like a donut shape that seals the oils inside the switch and is geared towards high cycle/high pressure applications like Off-Highway Vehicles, Transportation and Alternative Energy.  The Piston style works excellent with oils but does not seal well against gases.  The repeatability and the average deadband for the diaphragm style is wider than the Diaphragm style. 

How do I choose a Set Point Pressure Range?

Determine what media you are using: 

  • If it is a liquid or a gas, choose a range from -10- to -60- to get the Diaphragm style. 
  • For liquids only, you can choose all the ranges: -10- to -100-, the Piston style.  

You will see in the chart below that there are some overlaps in the Pressure Ranges.  This is due to the two different sealing methods.  See FAQ above. 

The goal is to choose a set point in the middle of a Pressure Range.  For example, if your set point required was 175 psi (12 bar), you would choose Pressure Range -30- versus -40- for the 175 psi (12 bar) is nearer to the middle of 75-275 psi (5.2-19 bar) range versus 150-500 psi (10.3-34.5 bar) range.
