Genset Units Using Universal Level Sensors in Power Generation Applications

The critical components and systems that make up a generator set need to be reliable. Gensets are particularly sensitive to failure issues. Emergency generators often sit unattended and non-operational for months at a time, only called into action when external power is cut off and immediate. Dependable operation is needed to keep hospitals, cell phone towers, and businesses across the world functioning. Equally challenging, a genset may be the only source of power to keep remote installations operating, far from any maintenance staff or drop-in replacements.

Application Challenge:

Finding a single liquid level sensor, with no moving parts and few condition limitations, that will reliably detect gearbox oil, coolant, engine oil, and will endure the vibration & conditions found in a genset. Consistency, and the ability to overcome vibration and environmental conditions, are factors to carefully consider when choosing level sensors for the various systems of a genset. These sensors, with varying designs and sensing technologies, are all expected to provide trouble-free operation often after lying dormant for long periods.

Application Solution:

Gems Sensors’ NEW ULS-100 Universal Level Sensor

The Universal Level Sensor does not rely on the characteristics (e.g., specific gravity) of the fluid to detect its presence or absence, and it has no moving parts to wear out, bind up, or damage. The ULS-100 will reliably detect most any liquid, and it resists coating and build up. With its robust stainless steel housing, IPX7 & IP6k9k rating, resistance to vibration, and wide operating temperature range, the Universal Level Sensor is perfect for the conditions present in generator sets. Its small footprint and non-intrusive sensing element fit nicely where space is critical. Having one sensor to replace the many types often used will ease product selection and reduce inherent technology & design limitations.
