Low-Cost Sensor Solution for Vending Machine Ice Cubes

December 7, 2018

Ice vending machines are used in restaurants, bars, hotels, venues, and many more populated places, as ice is an important part of the dining or entertainment experience to have that fresh, cold drink customers want. However, when large quantities of ice are required for a tailgate, barbecue, or wedding, ice vending machines are conveniently located in strip malls, store parking lots, and throughout the Americas and Australia.

These ice machines are run by a few simple applications, including water and certain types of sensors. Together, they make the machine work properly. But if one part of the machine isn’t working properly, the ice won’t be created. To guarantee the kiosks are working properly, flow indication is required, or there will be no tailgate!

Challenge

Finding a low-cost solution to fit the cleanliness requirements of the application

Some sensors that may fit for these types of applications are a bit pricey and lack quality. Finding the correct one may be challenging, but Gems offers a wide range of sensors to suit almost any application and can even be customized. The sensor used for this application was a viable technical solution within a budget and fit the materials of construction requirements as well. In order for the ice machine to be sterile, it can’t be made of brass and must be made of polyethylene plastic.

Solution

FS-380P Flow Switches

A sensor is used inside the ice machine to continuously monitor the system for low ice levels. It then sends a signal for the machine to begin creating more ice as demand increases. The FS-380P is used to ensure that water is flowing from the external water line into the cube-making reservoirs. If there is no water flowing, the system then sends a signal to shut down the production of ice until the unit is repaired – no water, no ice. To prevent unwarranted wear and tear on the system, the sensor prevents the system from running dry. Our sensor ensures that water is flowing from the external city water line to the cube making system, preventing it from running dry - all while remaining cost-efficient.
