Concept and Feasibility

Gems Sensors begins the Concept, Feasibility and Project Plan phase, by listening closely to our clients' needs and product performance requirements. Because Gems Sensors acts like an extension of our client’s team, understanding their objectives is critical; they are the measurement used to evaluate the project progress and success.

Gems Sensors uses this information to define the project goals, user requirements, functional specifications and develop proof of concepts demonstrating product feasibility. These concepts examine trade-offs between various design approaches and solutions and identifies potential intellectual property.

To help capture the specifications, both functional and user, Gems Sensors assembles an expert team experienced in engineering, manufacturing, quality and supply chain management. Based on decades of experience, we know the right questions to ask to develop a clear picture of the product, from function to performance to packaging.

Gems Sensors project managers work with our clients to develop a project plan defining the resources and actions needed to complete the development in a timely manner with the best possible product outcome. The plan also identifies potential risks including schedule, resource and cost.

Early in the process, Gems Sensors assembles a dedicated project team specific to the needs of each client's contractual project. The project team is responsible for meeting the project milestones and containing project costs. The team also provides our clients consistency from initiation to completion.

Both internal & external communication is critical to project success. Internally the Gems Sensors project team holds weekly meetings to review progress. Externally, in addition to team client reviews, frequently scheduled meetings are conducted and recorded as part of the formal design history file. Efficient flow of information means that issues can be dealt with as soon as they arise.

Once the concept is ready for development; Gems Sensors engineers utilize proven product design processes to successfully progress the concept to prototype. Prototypes undergo verification testing in our lab to ensure design requirements are met. Deficiencies are identified and the design is further refined.

Successful verification tests lead to a Critical Design Review/ Phase End Review and approval for Pilot Production and Validation. An engineering release puts the project documentation under formal change controls.


Pilot Production and Validation

The Pilot Production phase is the final stage before commercial manufacturing. Because Gems Sensors understands manufacturing, we understand how to design for manufacturability. Our objectives are a smooth transition to manufacturing, and to verify project goals – quality, delivery and cost targets – are met.

Validation and FAIs are performed on each part and assembly to assure that the design specifications have been met. When you're ready, a Phase End Review finalizes the documentation package and authorizes transfer to commercial manufacturing.

Commercial Production

Turnkey manufacturing begins with lean and cellular manufacturing driving shorter production cycle times, higher capacity and quicker customer response time.

Gems Sensors operations team finalizes work instructions and all cell documentation including a resource allocation plan and implements the material sourcing plan developed in the Pilot Production phase.
